Ava

‘So, the two of you got back together in the end?’ ChiChi smooths down her tight-fitting white dress and smiles. ‘Well done!’

Well done? What’s that supposed to mean? She was there in snowy February, of course, consoling Will when he was at DelRoy’s flat. A fact she’s clearly not going to let me forget easily. But, I’ve been enjoying my time at Gil’s so far, chatting to the girls. There is no way I’m letting this woman get under my skin.

I give her a curt nod and she adds, in her husky voice, ‘William looks well, by the way. How’s he been?’

I look at her unsurely. ‘You mean…?’

‘After the op? I heard all about it, but don’t worry, I understand it’s not common knowledge in these circles and I’ll keep my mouth shut till William decides to let people know in his own time. To be frank…’ she leans in, confidential-like ‘… after having had such a major procedure, he appears one helluva lot better than I’d imagined he was going to… In fact, he looks much the same.’ She takes me in curiously. ‘Is he?’

I put my orange juice to my mouth and take a deliberate sip.

‘Hey, go talk to him in a bit, and you’ll see for yourself,’ I say at last. ‘I’m sure he’ll remember you from the past.’ Dim and distant, I don’t add.

‘Men do tend to,’ she replies, looking around. Is she looking for Will? I saw him with her boyfriend, DelRoy, a few moments ago. They were huddled in close conversation by the tree, but she can discover that much by herself. I feel a flash of heat come to my face. I don’t know what she’s after. If she and Will ever did get anything going after Christmas, she’s going to be disappointed because he won’t remember it.

No matter how unforgettable she thinks she is.

There again, I doubt anything happened. Whatever residual feelings Will might still have had for her, I know he’d never have done anything to wrong DelRoy. He just wouldn’t. And she and DelRoy have been together for years, they were still together in the new year – so, she can hint away all she likes, but I’m not biting.

We’re standing by the patio doors out to Gil’s garden, but, not finding who she’s been scanning for, ChiChi turns back to me now.

‘Not you, though, Ava?’

‘I’m sorry?’

‘I heard he didn’t remember you?’

I blink. How much does this woman know?

‘Oh.’ I force a laugh. ‘Who’ve you been talking to, ChiChi?’

‘William’s mum, Sylvie, rang us a few weeks back…’

‘Ah. Of course.’ I know Sylvie always adored both DelRoy and ChiChi. As they were formerly important people in Will’s life, I can see why she’d have thought to have let them know. Especially as she’s not been able to be around too much herself. But I wish she hadn’t.

‘That must’ve been something, though – going in after that op, to find your boyfriend of a few years doesn’t even know you?’ ChiChi pursues with a little shudder.
